CONCEPT

“An irreverent and exciting show with 20 performers on stage;

A musical that takes you back in time to the 1600s, between mystery and poetry.

An interactive performance, where the walls of the theater become canvases full of  colors, shapes, ideas — the entire art of a Master.”

 Rome in the 17th century is home to the church and the prostitutes; and to Caravaggio, an artist who does not discriminate between the one or the other.

On stage, stunning Baroque costumes, original songs written by Marco Savatteri, and huge scenes transform the Squares of Rome into the studio of the “cursed Painter”, taking us back in time on a vibrant journey towards the everyday life scenes of a square where the heart of Rome beats, eternally reaching upwards yet tragically anchored to the ground.

Through never-before-heard music ranging from Baroque flavors to rap, elegant choreography, and duels to the death, the story of Caravaggio is narrated, who, through his Bacchus and his John the Baptist, describes human nature—both physical and emotional—,that is disarming and frightening simply because it is real, full of cracks and contradictions.

THE SHOW

The spectators, unaware of what awaits them, will find themselves involved in a tangled mystery.

Everyone will be a protagonist, a witness, or perhaps a suspect, in an astounding disappearance: the theft of one of Caravaggio’s canvas. And so, amid questions, searches, twists, and hypotheses, the case opens. The stage: Palermo. “One of the most important art thefts in history,” declares the FBI. Who stole the Caravaggio? The characters from the world’s most famous artworks gather, worried, then rise in fear, pointing fingers at the man—creator and destroyer. How can we trust them? The artworks flee. And suddenly, the news becomes legend, reality turns surreal, until he appears: the genius, the master, Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio.

It would be nice to speak to him, but even Michelangelo is on the run: he has killed a man.

It will be his friends and enemies from the 1600s who will try to tell his story, in a continuous leap between past and present, with stories told and untold, while life bustles in Piazza Navona, in a shabby, holy, whore, beautiful Rome. The artworks want to escape, Michelangelo flees, the stolen painting is still an unsolved mystery: three different stories intertwine irreversibly to investigate the power of Art and the fragility of its creators. A man flees — what remains? Immortality. An interactive show, where the walls of the theater become canvases that throw colors, shapes, ideas— the entire art of a Master.

This chaotic story is the pretext to discover or rediscover the great Caravaggio, to try to grasp him in his ever-running life; but the show is above all a warning to remember the importance and sacredness of our artistic heritage that must be protected: because the deliberate destruction of a work is an unforgivable crime. “Caravaggio – The Escape” contemplates art and defines its sacredness, as a postulate to be sealed in our consciences. We must protect beauty.
